How to read a QR code from an image

  1. Take a photo or screenshot that shows the whole QR code.
  2. Drop the image onto the box above, click the box to choose it, or copy the image and press Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac) on this page.
  3. Read what the code contains. Links get an “Open link” button, and WiFi codes show the network name and password with a copy button.

Questions

How do I scan a QR code that is on my screen?

Take a screenshot (Windows: Win+Shift+S, Mac: Cmd+Shift+4), then paste it here with Ctrl+V or Cmd+V. This is handy when a QR code is in an email, a PDF, or on a website and you cannot point a phone at it.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The QR code is decoded by your browser on your device. The image is never sent anywhere.

Why was no QR code found?

The code may be blurry, too small, cut off at the edge, or covered by glare. Try a sharper photo taken straight on, with the whole code and a little space around it visible.

Is it safe to open the link?

QR codes can point anywhere, including to fake login pages. Check the address shown before you open it, especially for codes found in public places or unexpected messages.
