Protect PDF

Lock a PDF with a password so only people who know it can open it.

How to password-protect a PDF

  1. Drop your PDF onto the box above, or click it to choose it. You can protect several PDFs with the same password.
  2. Type a password, then type it again to confirm. Anyone who opens the PDF will need it.
  3. Optionally stop people from printing, editing, or copying text.
  4. Click “Protect PDF”. The locked file downloads straight away.

Everything happens in this browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, and closing the tab clears it all.

Questions

How strong is the protection?

PDFs are encrypted with 256-bit AES, the strongest standard PDF encryption, supported by all modern PDF readers. A long password with words, numbers, and symbols is hard to guess.

Is my password or PDF sent anywhere?

No. Encryption happens in your browser, on your device. We never see your file or your password.

What if I forget the password?

There is no way for us to recover it, because it never leaves your device. Keep the password somewhere safe, or keep an unprotected copy of the PDF.

Do the “prevent printing/editing/copying” options always work?

Standard PDF readers such as Adobe Acrobat, Chrome, and Preview respect them, but some programs ignore them. For truly private documents, rely on the password to open the file.
