Extract text (OCR)

Pull the text out of scanned PDFs, photos, and screenshots. Copy it, or download it as a text or Word file.

How to extract text from a scanned PDF or image

  1. Drop a scanned PDF, photo, or screenshot onto the box above, or paste an image with Ctrl+V. You can add several images at once.
  2. Pick the language of the text. Add a second language if the text mixes two, such as English and Spanish.
  3. Click “Extract text”. The text appears below as each page is read.
  4. Copy the text, or download it as a plain text (.txt) or Word (.docx) file.

Everything happens in this browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, and closing the tab clears it all.

Questions

What is OCR?

OCR (optical character recognition) reads the letters in a picture and turns them into text you can copy, search, and edit. It’s how you get the words out of a scanned letter, a photo of a document, or a screenshot.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Text recognition runs inside your browser, on your device. The first time, your browser downloads the recognition engine and the language you picked from this site; your documents are never sent anywhere.

Which languages are supported?

English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Hindi, Bengali, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, and Korean.

How do I get the best results?

Use a sharp, straight, well-lit picture where the text isn’t tiny. For PDFs that already contain real text, the tool uses that text directly, which is exact and instant.
